March 20th - These sand paintings are done completely by hand. On the back of each piece is a card with the artists name and written in the artists hand the name of the painting. The Navajo people believe the universe to be delicately balanced. Only man can upset it causing disaster or illness. When this happens a medicine man must restore the natural balance. Balance is restored by healing the offender with chants herbs prayers songs and sand paintings.

Fimo Clay Sculpture

February 26th - We just received our first shipment of these amazing works of art. These beautiful and artistic animals are created with fimo clay. Many different colors of fimo clay are used in each design. Colored canes of clay are used to create an illustration. The central design is repeatedly stretched and cut as other designs are added. Just as in nature simplicity is replicated over and over until the finished organism becomes quite complex. The composite image is finally reduced by stretching to the size of a small coin and then cut and applied much like mosaic tiles to the animals form. Each and every stage of the process is done by hand. Because each piece is hand made no two pieces are exactly a like.

Tribal Masks from Bali

February 22nd - We added a great selection of high quality tribal masks including beautiful painted hibiscus wood.

Mammoth Ivory Netsuke

February 20th - Large shipment of Netsuke including many Mammoth Ivory pieces.

In the town of Hakone Japan craftsmen practice an art form that has been passed down through the generations. This famous art is called Himitsu-Bako, or Puzzle Box also know as Secret Boxes. These make great gifts.

Japanese Sushi Sets - Over 75 different designs to select from. The largest inventory available on the internet. We have everything you need to set your table in style for your next Sushi Party or Chinese Food with your family.

Cloisonne - Cloisonné is a famous traditional enamelware with a history of over 500 years. Cloisonné is one of the famous arts and crafts of Beijing. The making of cloisonné requires rather elaborate and complicated processes: base-hammering, copper-strip inlay, soldering, enamel-filling, enamel-firing, polishing and gilding.

The Tetsubin (pronounced “tet-SUE-bin”) teapot is a Japanese teapot made of cast iron. A typical Tetsubin teapot has a geometric, organic or animal pattern decoration on the side where its spout faces your right. This is because the pot is held in the left hand in Chanoyu, the Japanese tea ceremony. Its design is thought to have been influenced by the kettles of the common Japanese households of the 17th and 18th centuries. These kettles were simple in design and undecorated. They were typically hung on the fireplace hearth to provide hot water, warmth and humidity to a household; they were extremely practical pieces of kitchenware.

Tea Sets from Japan, China, and Vietnam that match our other Japanese Tableware perfectly. Dozens of varieties of Tea are also available.

Bone and Wood Inros - Each item is individually hand carved with amazing details. Our inro are all complete with Netsuke and Ojime attached with silk cord. We stock the largest selection of Netsuke, Inro, and Ojime in the world with over 1,000 different designs offered throughout each month.

Mammoth Ivory Netsuke - Our Mammoth Ivory comes exclusively from Hong Kong. Being under British rule for 99 years Hong Kong has the strictest regulations of any Asian nation. The Mammoth ivory used in our carvings is imported into Hong Kong from Russia where it is currently being excavated. Cites certificates were issued both in Russia as raw material and then in Hong Kong as the finished carved product which certifies that it is Mammoth ivory.

Inside Painted Snuff Bottles - Both Chinese snuff bottles, as well as the tobacco powder contained by the Chinese snuff bottles were at the very core of a fashion whose popularity had never before been experienced in China’s extensive history.  Due to it’s exceptional versatility of style, technique and material, all in one small object, as well as the fine craftsmanship, these tiny masterpieces quickly became one of the most notable representations of the use of artistic skill throughout the Qing Dynasty.

Gold Leaf Lacquer - Gold Leaf Lacquer ware is one of the finest crafts produced in China. It involves a 20 step process that converts normal objects of porcelain or wood into beautiful masterpieces. Each piece is hand painted and gilded with gold leaf, then finished with over 10 coats of lacquer, a process that can take up to a month to complete.

The description of this trade route to the west as the `Silk Road' is misleading. In fact, no single route or road was taken. In crossing Central Asia, several different branches developed, passing through different oasis settlements.
