Facts about Mother’s Day
We
have all heard of Mother’s Day, knowing this is a day
of celebrating the lives and works of mothers.
During this time, children do wonderful things to
show moms how special they are and how much the things
they do are appreciated.
However, as you will learn in this article,
Mother’s Day is shrouded with interesting facts, some
that we want to share.
Mother’s Day was
celebrated in ancient Greece during the springtime
months, as a way of honoring Rhea, the “mother of
Gods”. In
honor of her, special drinks and honey cakes were
served. The
celebration always took place at dawn at which time the
event began with the presentation of flowers.
In Africa, some of the
tribal people do not call themselves families.
Instead, they refer to themselves as Maharis,
which translates to “motherhoods”.
The Imperial family of
Japan has a long descendant line from Omikami Amaterasu,
which means “Mother of the World”
To show honor to past
mothers, the Chinese will begin the family name with the
symbol that means “mother”
The woman who wrote
the song, Battle Hymn of the Republic”, fought hard
and long for women’s rights, desperately wanting to
bring attention to the call to peace specifically for
mothers who lost husbands and/or sons during the
Franco-Prussian War.
In Greek, meter
and mantra,
translate to “mother” and “measurement”
respectively
One of George
Washington’s many famous sayings was, “My
mother was the most beautiful woman I ever say.
All I am I owe to my mother, I attribute all my
success in life to the moral, intellectual, and physical
education I received from her”.
For their outstanding
gift of motherhood, Native American Indian women are
honored with the name, “Life of the Nation”
Another famous saying
comes from Rose Kennedy who once stated, “I
looked on child rearing not only as a work of love and
duty but as a profession that was fully as interesting
and challenging as any honorable profession in the
world, and one that demanded the best that I could bring
it”.
Although highly
popular in the United States, Mother’s Day is a
celebration seen in many other countries to include
Italy, Finland, Denmark, Belgium, China, Mexico,
Australia, Thailand, and Russia.
Eve, the first woman
in the Bible, is known as being the “Mother of all the
Living”
“Mothering Sunday”
was an English tradition celebrated during the 17th
century whereby servants would head home to visit
family, taking with them sweets and cakes for the
mothers.
The woman responsible
for the creation of Mother’s Day in the United States
was named Anna Jarvis.
While she was the one who requested that house
officials wear white carnations in honor of mothers
around the country, she was also the woman who nine
years after her quest filed a lawsuit to stop all
celebration of Mother’s Day, believing it had become
corrupt from greed.
